Nonetheless, the perception of the "tired businessmen" as a Broadway patron was alive & well throughout the 50s and 60s, and perhaps before. I've seen countless references to them in reviews from that era. One particular critic reviewed a late 60s show (I believe it was Her First Roman) and stated "Here's a show that will give the tired businessman exactly what he needs: sleep."

But I think that commercial is a gas; a real window into another time period. I've read that, as promotions go, this one backfired spectacularly; a number of businessmen took advantage of it, but they brought along their mistresses instead of their wives. And when United Airlines sent the actual wives thank-you notes and expressed hope they enjoyed their trips, all hell broke loose. "I don't know who my husband took to Atlanta, but he didn't take ME!"

The promotion was soon discontinued.
