Memorable "I REMEMBER MAMA" played entirely by veteran actresses for Transport Group

Posted by: dreambaby 09:39 am EDT 03/31/14

I've been surprised by the lack of commentary on ATC about "I REMEMBER MAMA." My only previous experience with it was in its unmemorable 1979 musical incarnation (memorable to me only in relation to Bette Midler's quip, "I never miss a Liv Ullman musical."). I approached the new production of John van Druten's hit play of 1944 with curiosity but little sentiment for the material. I was, though, intrigued by its employing a team of actresses in their 60's, 70's and 80's which included many I had sentiment for from their association with productions I'd seen or known of as landmarks of theater history.

I found the production to be charming and very moving. The bracing, inescapable realities of aging and mortality presented by the collection of wonderful talented older women - many best know for work from decades ago - performing all of the female and male parts in the play created an effective context for this lovely, if sentimental, memory play. A celebration of life and a wonderful evening in the theater.

Audra's only doing 70 performances, and that Circle In The Square space would be perfect for Mama.

Please, someone make it happen.

I agree. I thought it was a beautiful production, quite moving. Not sure how much I was influenced by my wonderful memories of the television show, which I never missed. But these actresses were all extraordinary.

It's near-perfect and one of the best stage pieces I've seen this season.

I haven't seen "IF/THEN," so I can't respond to his or others' reviews of that, but I think Brantley on "I REMEMBER MAMA" is pretty accurate, and beautifully written.
