4 shows in 3 Days - Bridges, If/Then, Rocky, GGTL&M

Posted by: scottcain 01:22 pm EDT 03/31/14

Just got back from a great weekend in NYC. My wife and I saw four musicals. Some brief comments on each:

If/Then - interesting concept and execution of the parallel stories, but neither story is itself all that compelling. Too manic and preachy for its own good though. Pretty good score, though I've like other Kitt scores better. Great cast.

Rocky - Wished it had a better score (especially considering how much I love F&A), though there were 3 or 4 very good songs. The book also seemed sort of by the numbers. However, Act 2 was considerably better than Act 1, helped a lot by the incredible technical achievements and fight choreography contained in the fight scene that is the last 20 minutes.

Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder - This show was fluff, but fun, frivolous fluff. The two leads were excellent and it was a funny and tuneful show. The set was fun and ingenuous. The show was very well-crafted.

Bridges of Madison County - This was surprisingly my favorite show of the trip. I don't like "chick flicks", but I thought that Jason's score and orchestrations were perfect for the material and I was emotionally pulled in. I thought that show was created, directed, and performed with so much care and tenderness. I hope that the show will find an audience, because it deserves it.
