Cheyenne Jackson Playbill Interview - and at Birdland

Posted by: lowwriter 04:26 pm EDT 03/31/14

Jackson mentions in the interview that he was asked to do On the Twentieth Century. He would have been perfect in the Kevin Kline role. But he turned it down.

I saw him at Birdland on Saturday and he sounded terrific. He seemed really happy.

how could he get bored at THE PERFORMERS? didn't it play like a show and half before it closed?

i'll bet i was more bored at it than he was. what a stinker that turned out to be.

as for not wanting to come back to b'way until something is written for him what you wanna bet the first halfway decent thing that shows up and his schedule is right* and he's back in a flash? unless he finds success in films which isn't unfeasible.

*i have absolutely no idea what his schedule was like for 20th CENTURY - pure speculation on my part.

glad to hear he's sober. not that i think he was a drunk or anything i just think more often than not it's a good idea for performers.

i thought he was fine in XANADU but then i liked the whole thing more than most people did. same for FR.

Not surprised he gets bored easily.

Whenever I've seen him he has always had a distracted air about him, as if he's thinking about a million other things. It didn't hurt XANADU all that much but I thought it was fatal in FINIAN'S RAINBOW, because if you don't believe Woody's passion for both Sharon and for the community, then there's not a lot to hang your hat on.

Watching BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY I couldn't help comparing him to Steven Pasquale, who has a similar look and bearing, but possesses a soulfulness that Cheyenne lacks. And Pasquale has a thrilling voice, where Jackson has a very pretty and pleasant voice but without much "there" there.

...is how he comes right out and admits to an interviewer that he gets bored easily and quickly. On the one hand, at least he's honest, and for what it's worth, some others -- like Barbra Streisand -- have admitted the same thing.

But Cheyenne doesn't exactly have Barbra's career. If he doesn't get as much film and TV work as he'd like over the next few years, he may feel compelled to do more stage work. And if so, he will have branded himself as someone who gets bored when doing a show for more than a brief run.

Perhaps he has ADD. He's very good in comedy. I thought he was well cast on 30 Rock and in The Performers.

I didn't see THE PERFORMERS, and while you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger 30 ROCK fan, his character never really stood out to me. I have to agree with the previous poster that in the instances where I've seen Jackson (Finian's, Damn Yankees, and Xanadu), I've found him largely bland--and in comedies like Xanadu, I didn't find him particularly funny.

I thought he was funny and perfectly cast in Xanadu, which may not seem like praise but he was very good.

He was wonderful in the It's a Bird, It's a Plane staged reading as well. Light self-mockery is his metier.

He's handsome and sings nicely, but I've found him somewhat over-praised, particularly on these boards. He's an okay actor, but has yet to demonstrate much range, even in the harrowing 9/11 movie (he did what was required, the roles were limited, to be fair). The comparison to Pasquale is fair, because the difference in emotional investment, a kind of gravitas, is considerable. XANADU was ideal for Jackson. If he has many other colors, he should use them. We haven't seen them, yet.

Whatever, he was far from one note or boring at Birdland on Saturday night.

He was actually quite funny in "The Performers". Some object that he or his acting partner threw went awry at the performance I went to, and he made it into some extra funny business.

Sounds like we won't be seeing Mr Jackson doing a run on Broadway any time soon, based on that article.
