Will 'The Maids' Clean Up?

Posted by: winters 06:44 am EDT 04/01/14

At 45 years of regular theater going I believe that I have hit my limit. I look for discounts but when it is something I 'must' see.....I hold my nose and pay full price.

I was looking forward to Cate Blanchett in 'The Maids.' I've seen her twice so far and she is a stage presence to be reckoned with. I've never seen this play.

Tickets went on sale at City Center. $265.00 for decent orchestra seats.
$200.00 for okay orchestra seats.
$150.00 for nasty orchestra seats.

I sit in the mezzanine for Encores....I can't imagine an intimate play from up there....or farther up.

I am going to have to let this one pass. I suppose that they are charging for this year's hot commodity, and I wish Lincoln Center Theatre Festival well....but this time it will be without me.

It may not sell as well as it should, partly because of the ridiculous overpricing, partly because of the lousy job LC Festival does with publicity. There were no other buyers at City Center box office when I was there yesterday afternoon. I got a third row Grand Tier ticket slightly off to the side for $120 but the number of seats priced over $200 will put this out of reach for many Blanchett and Huppert fans. ( I doubt there are many Genet fans who'd pay $265 a ticket either.)

I agree with you about the 265 price tag (ramen for dinner, again?!), but I found a seat on the side in the grand tier for about half that. Not saying there were many of those but there were a few (and I figured being a bit to the side would be fine)

I love Cate Blanchett but this isn't happening for me. One reason is because I don't have an real desire to see The Maids. I won't pay those prices.

I did for Uncle Vanya and it was worth it. Friends of mine sat in the back of the orchestra at CC and couldn't hear the actors.

I sat in the 'obstructed' mezz and had NO trouble hearing anyone at "Vanya". (The seat was very good, in fact-I didn't miss anything really-no acting or dialogue or anything. I might have missed a set piece, but that wouldn't bother me.)

Pretty much the same here. I have seen The Maids (I think there is also a film version with Glenda Jackson that survives from the 70's, but not sure) and think Ms. Blanchett will bring a lot to the play, but City Center is a barn if you are not seated well and I cannot see paying that kind of money to see Ms. B through my binoculars. I saw her Blanche, her Yelena, and her magnificent Hedda so I guess that will have to be enough for now.
BTW, in the past I have see excellent work at the Lincoln Center Theatre Festival, but last year was very disappointing and this year looks weak as well. I hope this trend can be reversed.

I have to say, this is a must see for me, but if the price is too high, I really recommend the film; Glenda Jackson is amazing-- I hope Cate can compare favorably

Part of the production design for the STC production of "The Maids" sees that everthing in Madam's apartment is covered by (live) security cameras, so really every seat has a great view. A crucial scene is played off-stage but still covered by th cameras. It is really an amazing experience. Cate Blanchett has said that her stage work on Streetcar, Vanya and Big & Small all informed her Oscar winning performance in Blue Jasmine. This is yet another triumph. My only quibble is that Huppert and Blanchett have such diverse accents that it's impossible to think of them as sisters. I wish it had been Blanchett and Judy Davis. But do go anyway. I'm so glad that I did.

Very interesting, I'll have to think about it. And search for the cash.
