It's interesting that plays and musicals are often adapted from films, but rarely -- never? -- from television shows.

Has there ever been a TV show made into a Broadway production?

Is there some difference between how films and TV shows are created and structured that makes one medium easier to adapt than others?

Given TV's reach you'd think producers would see the value in putting on stage characters and situations that are known by the masses. Or maybe there's the issue: TV characters are too exposed already.

Happy Days. There is a touring show based on I Love Lucy.

I think the big difference between movies and TV shows is that most TV shows tell their stories over an extended period of time. At least one season, and often more. Movies (and live theater) tell a story over a period of a few hours or so.

It seems to me that if you ARE going to adapt a TV show, you have to pick a specific episode, or I guess you could just use the characters and situation of the TV show and write an original story, but clearly that hasn't inspired many (any?)

I did not see Happy Days. I Love Lucy recreates two famous episodes but intersperses them with commercials (songs, jingles), and interaction with the "studio" audience, so they sort of found a way "in" to the episodic framework.

Besides nostalgic comedy spoofs, like a Gilligan's Island, I think it's the dilemma of what to focus on. A movie is 3 hours beginning to end.
