I think the LADY DAY is a play revival, but do you really think that they will nominate the production in such stiff competition? I suspect that Audra will get the credit for the strength of the piece. Audra, Cherry, Tyne, Debra?, Estelle?

I think it's going to be:

Tyne Daly
Cherry Jones
Estelle Parsons
Audra McDonald


and for the last slot either:

Debra Messing
Rebecca Hall (I kind of think she deserves the slot)

I think it's Cherry Jones' to lose. She gave the most memorable performance by a leading actress in a play for me this season. It was quite an extraordinary performance. I'd watch out for Parsons, who's never won. I think Audra will have to settle for the honor of being nominated in all four categories and wait to win this one (which, face it, will happen sooner or later).

I know Tony voters who only found Jones to be OK. I liked her but have seen better Amandas. I think Daly might be the frontrunner here.

Parsons could be overlooked again for a nomination as she was with the Helen Hayes awards.

What "play" has the main actress singing numerous songs?

LADY DAY should be a musical.

But every one of them has been ruled a play by the Tony Administration committee. If they follow precedent (which is a big "if"), Lady Day will be ruled a play as well.

But which precedent do they choose?

Pam Gems' ''Marlene'' was a 1999 play with music, yet the Tonys nominated Sian Phillips for Leading Actress in a Musical and nominated Gems for Best Book.

(Still sounds like ''Lady Day'' oughta be a play ...)

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you talking about things like Liza's at the Palace and Minnelli on Minnelli? Those were concerts and were not Tony-eligible.

Flora The Red Menace, The Rink and The Act were musicals.

Well Contact shouldn't have been ruled ANYTHING. It used pre-recorded music and was people dancing. That's not a musical-and it set the precedent for the now-defunct special events Tony (which I honestly think we could use again).
