Don't Take Off-Broadway for Granted

In fact, the Equity contracts for Off-Broadway productions are a significantly lower wage scale than on Broadway, and the actors for a commercial one do get a higher wage. If you think the opportunity to earn the higher wage in the commercial production doesn't matter to an actor, I'd guess you're not an actor.

Many people think the Off-Broadway scene is thriving as always. Actually, commercial Off-Broadway -- once a crucial seedbed of American theater -- is moribund. Thank 20 years of Republican mayors who favored Wall Street tax subsidies and luxury real estate development in Manhattan.

What now exists are a group of complex hybrid institutions that rely on philanthropic and foundation support and a tiered wage structure. It's easy to criticize, but hard to run them with artistic vision and checks that don't bounce.
