| Odd as it may seem, Big Fish is starting to look pretty good to me. Although I doubt it will be nominated, the other new musicals are not very distinguished this year. After Midnight is well crafted but is a retread of Sophisticated Ladies. I actually enjoyed Beautiful the most, but although it may be nominated I don't expect it to win. Bullets Over Broadway is looking good, but I wouldn't be surprised if they go for Aladdin. | |

| A nomination for the terrible but popular Beautiful is a stretch. Outside of Mueller, there is little to recommend it. With After Midnight and the disappointing but better crafted Bullets likely to get nominations, I think the nominators giving three of the five Best Musical slots to shows that don't feature new scores unlikely. | |

| I always find it odd -- and I've seen it a few times on this board -- when people compare AFTER MIDNIGHT to SOPHISTICATED LADIES and declare that they're basically the same. True, they're both by Ellington, among others, and they're both revues, but AFTER MIDNIGHT is so carefully structured, musically and choreographically authentic, and includes dance styles that are contemporary along with the period stuff, all the music in it is from the '20s and '30s, before Strayhorn joined Ellington, it's specifically a tribute to the Cotton Club years and the Harlem Renaissance, unlike SOPHISTICATED LADIES, which felt contemporary and not about period. And it focusses on instrumental sound and individual instrumental players in a way that is completely unlike SOPHISTICATED LADIES. There's something a little, what, cursory, about these comparisons. I think AFTER MIDNIGHT is superior in every way except that it doesn't have Gregory Hines. On the other hand, it does have Jarod Grimes. And guest stars, some better than others. In any case, I don't see these kind of sloppy comparisons of other shows that could have garnered them. Which hardly means it will win the Tony. But it deserves a nomination. It's beautifully crafted and non-stop entertaining. We haven't had a lot of either one this year. | |

| I have this strong feeling that Bullets will be the front-runner, however the reviews shake out. It's the closest thing to a crowd-pleaser this season that's also doing respectable business AND that also has a recognizable title and some offstage brand names associated with it - the voters have often gone with that sort of show over the artsy and ambitious (picking Crazy For You over Falsettos and Jelly's Last Jam, choosing Spamalot over Light in the Piazza and Spelling Bee). Moreover it's a show that will be easy to tour, with an ensemble cast that needs no stars (unlike the vehicles that are If/Then, Bridges, Gentleman's Guide.) So my money's on that. After Midnight and Beautiful seem the most likely dark horses, but in this season with so many new book musicals I just don't see them picking a jukebox show or a revue. And while I think Aladdin will surprise with many nominations, it wasn't praised for the sort of inventiveness that Lion King was. I wish Big Fish would be nominated too, and hope the album will help it get some love for its score, and help some of the performances be remembered. If Bullets does become the front-runner, no doubt many will say it got there by default - but in what did turn out to be a surprisingly undistinguished season, Bullets seems the least problematic of a mediocre lot. There've certainly been worse Tony winners for Best Musical - some within recent memory. | |

| Honestly, this is the Best Musical of the Season, with After Midnight being a close second. Rocky, Bullets, Aladdin will round out the nominations, IMHO | |

| I think the fact that folks don't even seem to be talking about this is just one of the many marketing failures of this show. Astonishingly bad, ineffectual, anemic and pathetic. Negative kudos to all involved. | |

| Trust me, I will be surprised if it even gets a nomination. On paper it reads like it can't miss but the production is a true stinker. One of the biggest disappointments in many a season. I think it could be s toss-up this year with no clear front-runner unless the show opening at the Palace upsets the cart. | |

| The show at the Palace (Holler IF Ya Hear Me) isn't starting until May 26 which I believe is way after the deadline for eligibility for this season's awards. | |

| I have seen every musical in NYC this year including Bullets and it is definitely NOT in my top 5...or even top 10 if we include revivals... By own thoughts? The Best Musical nominees will be: Gentleman's Guide Rocky Bridges of Madison County Alladin and if they include a 5th one this year it will be Big Fish | |

| Last night I was speaking with someone who had just seen Bullets and not only did he not like it, he said that the audience did not laugh much, and the response did not seem enthusiastic. I saw it a couple of weeks ago. I had distinctly mixed feelings about it, but the night I saw it, the audience was very responsive, laughing a lot and giving the numbers strong responses. The standing ovation at the end seemed much more than obligatory. I remained seated. | |

| I have not, but even as a fan of the film, I'm not drawn to a show that juke boxes standards. (It's just not my taste, not because the music and lyrics aren't stellar; to me, shoehorned words written independent of circumstance offer limited access to character.) Are the Tony Awards message-senders? One recalls the "upset" when AVENUE Q bested WICKED, and tea leaves were read about what "message" was being sent. Ultimately, not much, since both shows have proven solid hits. But this year, if the new shows are passed over for a recycled film with an added score, we will no doubt wonder if the hands of new composer-lyricist teams have been slapped by a business claiming to embrace them. Or not. If BULLETS takes the top award by default (because in the message-sending department, no one wants to pat Disney on the head again, even in an off-year), will we begin wondering about the future of the entirely home-grown, from-the-ground up American musical? Maybe until September. | |

| I wish. Nope. Check again - Falsettos won Best Score and (oddly) Best Book. Crazy For You won Best Musical that year. (93? 94? Can't remember & too lazy to check) | |

| I don't think it's odd that FALSETTOS won best book. People think that because there is little dialogue that there is no "book" which is very much the structure and guts of a musical. Books always get the blame for a musical going south but rarely praise for it succeeding (1776 and GYPSY being notable exceptions). FALSETTOS certainly deserved Best Book honors that year (1992). | |
