I have this strong feeling that Bullets will be the front-runner, however the reviews shake out. It's the closest thing to a crowd-pleaser this season that's also doing respectable business AND that also has a recognizable title and some offstage brand names associated with it - the voters have often gone with that sort of show over the artsy and ambitious (picking Crazy For You over Falsettos and Jelly's Last Jam, choosing Spamalot over Light in the Piazza and Spelling Bee). Moreover it's a show that will be easy to tour, with an ensemble cast that needs no stars (unlike the vehicles that are If/Then, Bridges, Gentleman's Guide.) So my money's on that.
After Midnight and Beautiful seem the most likely dark horses, but in this season with so many new book musicals I just don't see them picking a jukebox show or a revue.
And while I think Aladdin will surprise with many nominations, it wasn't praised for the sort of inventiveness that Lion King was.
I wish Big Fish would be nominated too, and hope the album will help it get some love for its score, and help some of the performances be remembered.
If Bullets does become the front-runner, no doubt many will say it got there by default - but in what did turn out to be a surprisingly undistinguished season, Bullets seems the least problematic of a mediocre lot. There've certainly been worse Tony winners for Best Musical - some within recent memory.
