MICHAEL RIEDEL TODAY: Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight’ ready to ‘Willkommen’ its first B’way troupe

In today’s New York Post, Michael Riedel writes about Broadway musicals getting spots on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

First up on April 10 will be Alan Cumming and cast members performing “Willkommen.”

Writes Mr. Riedel: “The Cabaret performance is the first of several that Fallon plans in the run-up to June’s Tony Awards. Fallon loves musicals, and when he moved his show to New York, he made it clear to his producers that he wanted Broadway in the mix. His ratings are strong, and he could do for the theater what Rosie O’Donnell did with her daytime talk show in the ’90s.”

True, Fallon has "buzz" right now but somehow I don't think he'll champion theatre in quite the same way Rosie did. I see Fallon more in the rock camp than the theatre camp. Rosie was clearly a fan of theatre and Letterman has been featuring stage performances for years (in no small part due to Paul Schaffer's early career involvement with the musical stage.)

His show has always been in New York. NBC moved Tonight Show back to New York when he took it over.
