These Paper Bullets at Yale Rep last night!

The NY Times was mixed about this new adaptation of Much Ado with songs from Billie Joe Armstrong but I found this a delightful transformation of the play. I loved the mod-British '60s setting and making four of the men members of a Beatles like band. Several of the performances were wonderful; my favorites were the actors in the band, the actress who played Hero/Higgy, Leo, and the Scotland Yard members. That's practically the whole cast. I also liked the songs by Billie Joe Armstrong who I hope continues to write for the theater. I think the show would benefit from having a few more songs. There were a few moments of sophomoric humor that didn't work for me but overall the concept worked wonderfully. Also the costumes and set were a lot of fun. I am surprised the Public Theater hasn't been involved with this show because it is a perfect fit for them. And I found it worked much better than the musical version of Love's Labours Lost last summer. I hope the creators continue working on this because I think this could evolve into something special.
