Actually The Public didn't license A CHORUS LINE, but produced it themselves on Broadway courtesy of a loan/gift from LuEsther Mertz. The Public kept 75% of the profit and Michael Bennett made 25%. Much better percentages than the 1% to 2% of the gross and/or profit that non-profits make when they license their production to commercial producers. nevertheless, even that can add up to significant money, as New York Theatre Workshop can attest to with RENT etc.
