Lortel Award Nominations

In reply to: 29th ANNUAL LUCILLE LORTEL AWARDS NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED - Official_Press_Release 07:44 pm EDT 04/01/14

The nominations reflect the richness of the off-Broadway scene this year. So many good productions and performances.

The four nominations for Best Musical were four of my favorite theater experiences of the past year: Fun Home, Here Lies Love, Natasha and Pierre, and What's It All About?

I agree about the richness of the season, but I was still expecting more nominations for the Apple Family plays ...

I'm a bit surprised that Kelli O'Hara was left off the Best Actress list for FAR FROM HEAVEN. Despite the failed production, I've only read strong reviews about O'Hara's performance.

I'm a bit surprised that Kelli O'Hara was left off the Best Actress list for Far From Heaven.

I was suprised by that too, but even more so for omitting Michael Urie, who has received some of the strongest raves of the season.

Still, what a wonderful crop of shows to honour!

Kelli was lovely but I guess whoever comes up with these nominations wanted to recognize some lesser known performers who are also doing excellent work.

Re the latter, I believe the solo show nom is intended as an across the board award including actor, director, writer and producer that supplants all others.

Yeah, that's how I read it too. It seems likely this is where Urie will be recognized.

I'm sure an actor would like the individual recognition but I think a lot of times it is hard in one person shows to draw the lines between who did what, and that might be a part of the reason.

True. In this case, does both the author and performer get an award?

my assumption is yes since both are listed as are the producers whereas in the best play and musical categories just the producers and author are listed.

Yes, lots of great work Off-Broadway this season. I don't envy the Lortel voters having to choose a "best" - especially in the musical categories.
