The Festival's mission is to introduce and promote global cultural activity and exchange of ideas, aiming to enlighten and engage audiences through performing and visual arts, educational programs and events. The U.S. Premiere of Eugene Onegin by Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia, an original play with music based on Alexander Pushkin's "novel in verse", will play 4 performances at New York City Center (131 West 55th Street): May 29th at 8 PM, May 30th at 8pm, May 31st at 8pm and June 1st at 3pm. Tickets are $35-$135. The Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia will bring a modern interpretation of Alexander Pushkin's most sincere and timeless work. World-renowned director Rimas Tuminas' theatrical adaptation of the work, recently recognized with Russia's most prestigious award, the Crystal Turandot, as the best production of the theatrical season, remains faithful to Pushkin's original text, providing an insight into the essence of the Russian soul. The play is classic Russian literature and will be performed in Russian with English subtitles. The U.S. tour is supported by the Ministry for Culture of the Russian Federation. Rimas Tuminas is the recipient of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Russian Festival of Performing Arts "Golden Mask" Award winner, International Stanislavsky Theatre Award winner, multiple Crystal Turandot Award winner, and Golden Nail Award winner. He has been the artistic director of the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia since 2007, one of the oldest Moscow theatre companies founded by Eugene Vakhtangov, a student of Stanislavsky. In 2011, the theater was recognized as most visited theater in Moscow. Eugene Onegin is as relevant today as it's been for almost two centuries with its enduring themes of condemnation, love, disillusionment, cynicism, compassion, and forgiveness. The Moscow Timesraves, "A stunning, breathtaking, wise and humorous rethinking of Alexander Pushkin's great verse novel that gave us glimpses behind the scenes and between the lines," and The London Guardiancheers, "anyone who saw the Vakhtangov Theatre will know they are a first rate troupe." Showcasing 45 actors on stage and impressive set designs, featuring music by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, along with Russian and French folk songs, Eugene Onegin is a daring and stylish display of real masterpiece theater. Maestro Spivakov and Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra (www.mvco.ru) return to the US to celebrate their 35th Anniversary at Avery Fisher Hall on May 18th at 3pm. Tickets are $85-$125. Vladimir Spivakov, one of the world's most prominent violinists and conductors, has lead the Moscow Virtuosi since 1979, setting up the gold standard for chamber music performance. The Washington Post has hailed the Virtuosi as "a dramatically unified ensemble" with "a sound that would put many full orchestras to shame". Moscow Virtuosi and Vladimir Spivakov are joined by international classical music stars Dmitri Hvorostovsky, baritone, and Olga Kern, piano, along with thesoloists from Spivakov International Charity Foundation for this special gala concert. The Spivakov International Charity Foundation Concert of Young Musicians, a series of performances by some of the world's most talented young musicians, will play Merkin Concert Hall at Lincoln Center on May 14th at 7:30pm. This showcase of young star instrumentalists will feature some of the world's most gifted young musicians, all who were discovered by the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation and later became winners of national and international competitions. These young masters will perform a vibrant program of beloved classics and contemporary repertoire. The concert will include an introduction by Maestro Vladimir Spivakov and short Q&A segment. Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation (www.spivakov.ru) was established in 1994 and is headed by celebrated Russian violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of the famed Moscow Virtuosi and the National Philharmonic of Russia. The Foundation participates in the UNESCO project "In Support of the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence." Since its inception, it has granted scholarships to more than 800 young talents. Piano virtuoso Denis Matsuev (matsuev.com) will perform a recital program of works by Haydn, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre (45 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA) on June 14, 2014 at 7 PM and at The Music Center at Strathmore Hall (5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda, MD) on Tuesday, June 17, at 8pm. Hailed by The New York Times as "the successor to Russian keyboard lions like Evgeny Kissin, Arcadi Volodos, and ... Vladimir Horowitz," Denis Matsuev has become a fast-rising star on the international stage, winning acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Winner of the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Shostakovich Prize, the Siberian-born Matsuev has made his name internationally as a passionate and powerful virtuoso and ardent Romantic, specializing in the music of Rachmaninoff.
