This Autumn Lacks Velocity (Possible Mild Spoiler?)

Posted by: Shutterbug 01:39 pm EDT 04/02/14

As the lights come down, The Velocity of Autumn begins a loud bang, literally. Once the curtain rises, however, this show quickly fizzles out.

Estelle Parons is wonderful but the show has very little forward movement. Likewise, Stephen Spinella does what he can with a blandly written role.

The premise is interesting: A fiesty older woman barricades herself in her Brooklyn brownstone, threatening to blow it up with homemade bombs if her children insist on having her committed to a nursing home. One of her sons climbs through an open window to try and talk some sense into her before it's too late.

There's a lot of dramatic potential there and some weighty themes that could be explored but unfortunately aren't fully developed. Somewhat disappointing given this amazingly talented cast.

For a first preview, the show was remarkably polished. Worth seeing if only for Ms. Parson's fine work.
