Its a good review and its fair. I happened to be there, sitting in nosebleed seats in the 2nd tier cause that was all that was left ticket wise months before her appearance -- so clearly people are clamoring to hear her, good or bad.

I found it somewhat sad - her notes are no longer there, and she seemed at times to be winded and struggling -- but she maintained remarkable composure, and sold the songs to the rafters.

I would LOVE to see her slow all this down, and do some more intimate material in a venue such as 54 Below...I'd be there.

it doesn't even have to be as intimate as 54 below. i found the recent shows at town hall with alan cumming pretty dreadful but i thought what a perfect size venue for her. i've seen her over the years come up from the audience in the carlyle and (i think) birdland. this isn't a slam against her at all but that close up doesn't work for her. you need a little distance. again, that's not a slam, it's just that close she felt too in your face. besides, stars should be seen from a distance, right?

i'm not saying a 54 below show wouldn't be good - there's more distance there than you get at the carlyle or at least it feels that way to me. and, i guess, what she'd get out of it that she couldn't get at town hall would be being able to make eye contact with her audience. so, yeah, i guess you're right. a 54 below show would be great. if you survived the fight for a ticket.

the allen room would work as well.

i could not agree with you more about her slowing it down. i'd love that, too. especially in new york. as much as the idea is brought up here and in conversation with me among friends i'm sure the folks who work with her musically (and are so smart and who so obviously care about her) have brought this up to her as well. i hope she listens.

" i hope she listens."

I couldn't agree more. However, the folks who pay for tix want to hear the hits...whether she can still deliver them or not. Even with her mother, I thought, "Can't you sing something different?" I actually treasure Jim Bailey's version of "Out of This Worlld"...because it pretends to present a JG version of a Weill classic. When I went to see Miss Garland in concert, I was lucky enough to hear her sing "Love of My Life" fom "The Pirate", which she had, to my knowledge, never sung in concert before...and in London she sang, "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder. But, let's face it, these gals were great singers and audiences would have risen to hear new or varied repertoire in tribute to their artistry. A good A&R man/woman could keep Liza relevant.... but would Ms Minnelli listen?

I think she IS listening. This tour is an experiment, I do believe, to see if she can do the warhorse numbers one last extended time, then put them away and segue into another phase.

54 Below is inevitable. It is already probably scheduled. If you're a fan and want to see her there, I'd start calling in favors and/or putting away some dough.
