ONE SLOT LEFT WED MATINEE

Posted by: jero 09:23 am EDT 04/03/14

I think I'd most enjoy modern and rousing..
period 20's feels heavy to me right now, oppressively british seems wrong too.
I'd like to hear more about after midnight-some have said the dance evokes the time period but crosses over to refreshingly current. maybe i goofed and should have booked this for after sundown?
is there a new play anyone's talking about? maybe I'll just have to go to the library.

my first vote would be for the oppressively british GENTLEMEN'S GUIDE. when this dark horse wins the tony you'll thank me. but if you won't be swayed i'd vote for AFTER MIDNIGHT, which i also loved.

But I really really liked after midnight. The tap dancing is top notch and I like dukes songs and they are well done. If you had to make a choice between after midnight. And a show you were dying to see, I'd say go see what you want. But the choice between the library (I assume billy rose taped show) and after midnight--go to midnight. It is a very fun 90 minutes that you will wish didn't end.

I'm not a producer or investors in this show. ;-).

thanks bud. I was actually thinking of pre-ordering radiant baby at the library... bcs a lot of choices seem to not fit my mood lately- overworked, tired, need a break and would prefer something NEW! a new dance take on classic jazz could fit that for me. and yeah.. 11 years old is NEW-it's of this century. thanks..

do you use to see the library stuff? I haven't been in probably 10 years after they instituted a library card system.

ann,I agree..isn't that odd? back in the days when i was still teaching for a studio and would find myself in nyc for a whole week at a time at a convention I'd have time to see even things that didn't register. I mean I paid the concierge for Lion King tickets because I thought it was time I saw it... i saw contact twice.... now, with three slots, and my 'special' needs,I can't fill them. I HAD to see matthew bourne's sleeping beauty so built in natasha pierre and a re-view of kinky boots around that....that was october.... i think.. now.. HELP. if I'm going to nyc I wanna see an original cast, but the pickings are slim.. I'm thrilled tho with violet and rocky.. I'm afraid I might (_____) when I see annie golden.... I just love her. but nothing else is screaming 'see mee" . I guess I'm a hard cookie. by the bye.. I hear Lin Manuel has a show coming up at the public in january. I've been to Nevis and the hamilton museum... combine the two and it almost becomes as imperative as my matthew bourne thing. but now.. ruh roh......

ok, i'm all for RADIANT BABY at the library because it is so fantastic but ... it's always going to be there. GENTLEMEN'S GUIDE and AFTER MIDNIGHT will disappear.

also, i have heard rumors that at some point in the future the performing arts collection will somehow be available for streaming. no clue when but about a year ago my branch had one of those how can we make the library better meetings and this came up.

the operative word is "rumor." No matter what some library employee may have said in passing at a meeting, it is not up to the library, and they would never ever get permission from all those who would have to consent. That is, unless someone comes up with a few billion dollars to compensate everyone and everyone's estate that would be involved.

have they dropped the requirement that viewers

have to justify seeing the production--actor, producer of shows, choreographers, etc. I know one can lie and see most shows by a simple statement (I was denied Jerome Robbins Broadway--i even went through the hoop to get permission from the lawyer running the estate and was denied). But it seems if anyone can stream the shows, that they will lose all control over the users.

We do have a poster who works there and provided the information for our FAQ entry. Hopefully, he'll chime in here if there's anything he can share.

After Midnight is certainly rousing -- 90 minutes, hot dancing and singing, great band. But it's not modern music, just some modern street dance interpretations here and there. But fun it is.

It's one of the most electric evenings I've had in the theatre. The 90 minutes just tear by with one dazzling number, seemlessly flowing into another. There are no mothballs here - it is vitally alive while staying relatively true to the period. That ensemble -- both the dancers and musicians -- must be exhausted after each performance. And the dancer you cite, Karine Plantadit, is just sensational. The way she moves on stage in Isabel Toledo's shimmering costumes is just breathtaking. I imagine that Vanessa Williams will be quite lovely in the 4 songs she sings, but even if she doesn't hit the mark, they're just 4 songs out of more than two dozen performed in 90 mins. This extended commercial clip actually gives you a very good feel for the show.
