Directed by Randy Sharp, Artistic Director of Axis and the director of Oliver’s first solo show, the acclaimed, Edinburgh Fringe First Award-winning East 10th Street, In The Park follows Oliver’s Helen & Edgar (2012), which The New York Times’ Ben Brantley called “utterly absorbing and unexpectedly moving.” The new production comes on the heels of Axis’ recent hit Nothing On Earth (Can Hold Houdini), which was written and directed by Sharp and lauded by The New York Times and others. In The Park will run May 8 – June 7 at Axis Theatre. Please see above for a performance schedule. Critics are welcome as of Friday, May 9 for an official opening on Monday, May 12. Axis is located at One Sheridan Square in the West Village (just off 7th Avenue, accessible from the 1 train at Christopher Street and the B/D/F/M/A/C/E at West 4th Street). In The Park finds Oliver wandering through Prospect Park, guiding his audience to hidden landscapes few have ever seen, while also revealing his innermost longings and regrets. In this most personal of Oliver's monologues, he maps his deepest memories of childhood and experience. The work is a journey of loss and hope, joy and sadness, along tangled paths to the fascinating place that is Oliver's heart. In addition to being part of Axis Company, Oliver is a founding member of the storytelling group The Moth. His work has been presented at numerous prestigious downtown venues including La MaMa and The Public Theater. He performed East 10th Street at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he received the Fringe First Award. Brantley calls Oliver “a Personality, with a capital P, a type celebrated in England as an Eccentric and in Middle America as a Character,” adding that Oliver is “a living work of theater all by himself.” The production includes lighting design by David Zeffren, sound design by Steve Fontaine and original music by Paul Carbonara. About Edgar Oliver As a stage actor, Edgar Oliver has performed in countless plays including Edward II with Cliplight Theater; Marc Palmieri's Carl the Second; Kestutis Nakas’ When Lithuania Ruled the World and numerous productions at Axis including A Glance at New York (Edinburgh Festival Fringe & NYC), Julius Caesar; USS Frankenstein and the Hospital series. His one-man show East 10th Street was performed in Edinburgh (Fringe First Award), Charleston, SC (Spoleto Festival) and in New York City (Axis and PS122). Oliver performed his latest one-man show, Helen and Edgar (directed by Catherine Burns of The Moth), at Theatre 80 St. Marks, Dartmouth College, Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA and most recently at the Public Theater as part of the Under the Radar Festival. His film roles include That's Beautiful Frank; Henry May Long (directed by Axis' Randy Sharp) and Gentlemen Broncos (directed by Jared Hess). Oliver is also the host of the television show, Odd Folks Home, on The Science Channel. About Randy Sharp Randy Sharp has been directing plays for almost 30 years. Educated in London she returned to the United States to attend Simon's Rock College, a unit of Bard. After graduating, Randy settled in New York City. Founded in 1996, her theatre company, Axis, acquired a permanent New York City home in 1998. The interior of the historic performance space, at 1 Sheridan Square, was transformed to reflect her vision of total theatrical immersion where audiences are surrounded by the experience of the play the moment they cross the threshold. Distractions from the material are minimal. Productions include Drama Desk Award-winner Last Man Club, A Glance at New York (Edinburgh Fringe & NYC); Julius Caesar; Down There; the U.S premiere of Sarah Kane's Crave, starring Deborah Harry, Seven in One Blow (published by DPS and performed every December in NYC and around the country); and Edgar Oliver's East 10th Street: Self Portrait with Empty House (Fringe First Award, Edinburgh Fringe; Spoleto Festival USA 2011). Her episodic play Hospital, about the interior life of a man in a coma, is a West Village phenomenon every summer. She also wrote and directed the period feature film Henry May Long, winner of 13 international film festival awards.
