THE MOST HAPPY FELLA Last Night

Posted by: mamaleh 01:09 pm EDT 04/03/14

I must confess that I'd never seen this show performed live, just on TV (PBS?) when I was an adolescent. I was fairly familiar with the score but somehow never realized that Joe's role was relatively small, with only one song, albeit with a reprise or two. Cheyenne did it beautifully, though, as I recall his doing about a decade ago either at Broadway Unplugged or B'way Under the Stars (can't remember which). The arias were lovely but for me the standouts are the upbeat numbers, such as "Standing on the Corner," Big D" and "Ooh, My Feet." Laura Benanti was perfect, Heidi Blickenstaff and Jay Armstrong Johnson were very winning. Shuler Hensley is a very strong performer, but they should have greyed his hair or given him a grey wig--he just didn't seem like the "old man, old man" Benanti sang about. Still, a small demur. Wonderful all around--especially that 38-piece orchestra.
