I saw it yesterday. It is certainly very tight now and the performances are good, although I think Helene Yorke is rather one-note in a role that is admittedly hard to flesh out. I certainly wasn't bored and there were some moments I smiled. But it just didn't really engage me. I didn't leave with the buzz that a good musical can give you. I think it's partly that it lacks likeable characters and genuine heart. And despite a lot of added lyrics to make them fit, the songs aren't filling out the story. It's like a chocolate easter egg - bright and tasty on the outside but hollow within. In a blah year for Broadway musicals, it will probably win the Tony but it wouldn't get my vote if I had one. One note to those buying tickets. Given the gangster theme, a lot of the cast are wearing hats cocked down in gangster fashion. This means more than half the audience is looking at a hat and not a face for parts of the show and that includes the key role of Cheech. It's probably a show best seen from the orchestra.
