Aladdin---just how many crystals were used? new material spoilers

Posted by: meeditoria 06:12 pm EDT 04/03/14

Saw Aladdin last night and had a terrific time. I've always thought that the movie's lyrics/music were some of the best of the Disney crop, and the "old" numbers were wonderful. The new songs were fine, although only one was memorable for me: "High Adventure," sung by Aladdin's new human sidekicks, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim. I have to particularly compliment Brian Gonzales's rich voice, although he gets too many hokey food jokes in the show.

As Aladdin, Adam Jacobs, is goofily earnest; his voice is also terrific.

James Monroe Iglehart---fabulous as the genie, with lots of silly voices, mannerisms, impressions, that were all his own and not a Robin Williams knockoff.

Jonathan Freeman, the original voice of Jafar, was a bit disappointing. Believe it or not, I wanted more of his stony evil (and his performance at the BCEFA end of show appeal was everything his performance in the show was not).

Don Darryl Rivera was another downer; he was channeling Gilbert Gottfried as Iago, same raspy irritating voice.

Courtney Reed delivered Jasmine's sass and independence. Her voice was fine, not sparkling, but good.

SO, are you wondering how I still had a terrific time? The ensemble were phenomenal---dancing, singing, costume changes. And the effects and lighting were joyously over the top. Beautiful, beautiful costumes (there's a page in the showbill about the materials and number of crystals involved). No tigers or monkey sidekicks, but you won't miss them. The joking reference to other Disney movies were fun, too.

Yes, it's a Disney steamroller, but it's a good one.
