Monday night I accidently discovered that the filmed performance of Nathan Lane in The Nance was showing at a local cinema. For $20, I joined five folks to see a brilliant performance. I missed the production in New York but knew many considered it Lane's finest work. I was devastated by his performance. So often those who attempt to portray a self-loathing character are hesitant to approach the rage that accompanies such emotion. Lane conveys both and so much more in a simple gesture or look. It is easy to see why the Lincoln Center production won three Tony Awards for its scenic, costume and sound design. Director Jack O'Brien brilliantly used a rotating set piece to keep the action flowing. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon the screening and the opportunity to see the filmed performance on a large screen. The quality of the production is so much better than that of those filmed productions from National Theater Live. Production materials shared that The Nance is expected on DVD as well as an upcoming PBS Live from Lincoln Center. Keep a sharp eye out. It is beautifully presented preservation of one of the theater's treasures finest performances.
