Michael Feinstein Sings Gershwin--pasadena Pops

Posted by: showtunetrivia 12:14 pm EDT 07/21/14

Had a terrific mother-daughter outing with my Rebecca and her longtime friend and her mom. Feinstein gave his usual great assortment of Gershwin favorites, sprinkling in patter about song and musical theatre history.

Best parts: "Rialto Ripples," a piano rag composed by teenager Gershwin in 1917; an affecting Fred Astaire tribute, highlighting the friendship of the pair and their works on stage and screen; a peacock chorus from in nearby arboretum, chiming in perfectly on several songs, including just after the clarinet glissando on the "Rhapsody in Blue;" and especially, in a mod to Ira's wordplay, "Tschaikowsky." His reprise, with the tempo even faster, left the orchestra in the dust. He turned around and grinned at them, "I think you owe me some accompaniment!"
