PLEIADES A New Play by Marissa Skudlarek Directed by Katja Rivera A world premiere play about seven young women in 1971, facing the feminist future. Phoenix Theatre, August 7 to 30, 2014 – PLEIADES, a new play by Marissa Skudlarek, will make its world premiere at the Phoenix Theatre in San Francisco this August, in a production directed by Katja Rivera and produced by No Nude Men. PLEIADES is a play about sisterhood in the literal sense and the metaphorical sense. Originally commissioned by the San Francisco Olympians Festival in 2011, the play re-imagines the Greek myth of the seven Pleiades sisters as a story about the Baby Boomers in their youth. The play takes place in 1971, at the height of the second-wave feminist movement. The seven Attlee sisters – Moira, Elaine, Teresa, Alison, Kelly, Sarah, and Meredith – are young women seeking to find their places within their family and within a changing world. Their rabble-rousing feminist cousin Diane and their charismatic Vietnam-veteran neighbor Bruce represent contrasting paths for them to choose. Over the course of an eventful Fourth of July weekend in the Hamptons, their consciousnesses are raised and they come to know the true meaning of sisterhood.PLEIADES features nine young and talented Bay Area actors. Kailah Cayou (Meredith), Miranda Hanrahan (Kelly), Susannah Lee (Moira), and Emily Ludlow (Sarah) are making their San Francisco theater debuts. Actors Monica Ammerman (Teresa), Erika Bakse (Diane), Annabelle King (Alison), Amy Nowak (Elaine), and Paul Rodrigues (Bruce) have previously been seen at such local companies as Dragon Productions, Role Players Ensemble Theater, San Francisco Theater Pub, the Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, the San Francisco Olympians Festival, Do It Live! Productions, and the Bay One Acts.PLEIADES plays Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, August 7 to 30 at 8 PM at the Phoenix Theatre, 414 Mason St, Suite 601, San Francisco. The August 7 and 8 performances are previews, with an official Opening Night on Saturday, August 9. Tickets are $25 . For more information, please visit www.pleiadessf.wordpress.com.

WORLD PREMIERE FAMILY ALBUM JOINS OSF REP Musical by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, created with and directed by Joanna Settle,
.—The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will open the world premiere of Family Album, with book and lyrics by Stew, music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, created with and directed by Joanna Settl in the Thomas Theatre Family Album was commissioned by OSF with support from the Edgerton Foundation. The show runs through August 31.

Told through soul-stirring rock ‘n roll music, Family Album is the story of middle-aged rocker Heimvey and his hip and influential, but relatively low-income band. Seasoned by years of touring throughout the country and on their way to NYC to open for a popular young band at Madison Square Garden, they land at the home of a former band member. Cleo, Heimvey’s ex-girlfriend and former muse, and her art dealer husband/stockbroker Norman, live with their precocious child. The visit stirs deep questioning about choosing the artist’s life or the homeowner’s, and as alliances are formed and frayed, everyone starts to itch for what someone else seems to have, and assumptions and expectations are shuffled and shattered

The Marsh presents 18-year-old visionary Dezi Gallegos’ GOD FIGHTS THE PLAGUE. This solo show starring Gallegos, directed by Charlie Varon, chronicles the comic and moving journey of a young man who sets out to determine if there is one God, no god, or many gods. For this original documentary theater piece, Gallegos interviewed individuals from nine different religions and recreated their words, wisdom, and wit onstage. From a rabbi who moonlights as a singing drag queen and an Elvis-worshipping witch, to the California State Director of American Atheists and a man who found Jesus in the back of a bus, Gallegos recreates his conversations with a wide variety of followers in his quest to know why we’re here, where we’re going, whether our ship has a captain or if we’re sailing on our own – ultimately creating a performance that rekindles faith in humanity. WHEN: It run thru – August 10, 2014 SHOWS: Saturdays at 8:30pm; Sundays at 7pm WHERE: The Marsh San Francisco Studio Theater 1062 Valencia Street (between 21st & 22nd Streets) Parking is available at New Mission Bartlett Garage(21st St between Mission & Valencia.)
