As you and other point out most of the material added to show to keep it from being "dreary" as you put it didn't work.

On the other hand everything from the film did work. They need to go back to the source material and trust it more.

It felt as if they were trying to make it more family friendly.

The book scenes for the theatre company were so stereotypical been there seen that before and whory - the gay joke - that the show would be better off without them.
