My Night With Reg at the Donmar

Posted by: Mytwocents 03:38 am EDT 08/06/14

Curious to know if a production ever made it to the States. The play is derivative of Boys in the Band though not as scathingly funny. The stereotypical self-pitying characters are bores and the playwright fails to generate much compassion for his sad souls. And the olay's clumsy construction doesn't help matters. I'd be interested in the opinions of those who know the play.

There was a very affecting 1997 film made of the play... Donmar reviews are all 4 star

I don't know how closely the film followed the play but the playwright adapted it himself. I remember it being very funny and moving.

The following are some critics feedback on the Donmar production today, all reviews I have read including the Times not quoted below are 4 start, this from the Evening Standard:

"Robert Hastie’s revival triumphs through a smartly judged mixture of exuberance and delicate understatement, highlighting the cool precision of Elyot’s writing — an assured command of structure and a gift for incisive comedy"

The Telegraph:

"My Night with Reg, Donmar Warehouse, review: beautifully judged

This superb revival of Kevin Elyot's play about a group of gay friends is both wickedly funny and deeply affecting, says Charles Spencer "

The Guardian:

"Kevin Elyot's breakthrough 1994 piece is well played, catching the secret fears and surface buoyancy of a group of companions. It stands up extremely well, both as a caustic study of gay manners in the age of Aids and as a piece that shows Elyot had the capacity to combine clever theatrical carpentry with emotional honesty"

I saw the play off-Broadway with Matthew Caulfield.

Maxwell Caulfield. Sam Trammell was also in that production. And both of them were nude onstage -- in a scene together, as I recall!

There was a production, I believe on Theatre Row, many years ago. My memory is it was pretty well received.

The New Group produced it in 1997 with, among others, Maxwell Caulfield and Edward Hibbert.

the new production is a glory and, for my money, far superior to the original. the similarities to THE BOYS IN THE BAND are paper-thin. they're both about gay men. end of story.
