The glory of old theatres and the churches that have preserved them.

Reading this thread about the Hellinger- which I only visited once when meeting a friend after GRIND; I didn't see the show but peeked in the open doors and got a glimpse, never thinking that it would cease operating a few years later- makes me think of the beautiful theatre district in Downtown Los Angeles, which I took a tour of this past February.

L.A.'s Broadway is reminiscent of 42nd Street in the early-to-mid-'90s: after a lot of the sex shops were gone but nothing else had moved in. There are a lot of low-end businesses and then scattered among them are these glorious theatres.

The Loew's Palace is one that has been reclaimed by a church and allows tours to come in and see the interior, only asking that they respect the worshippers and be judicious with noise and photos.

The L.A. Conservancy offers tours of the theatres on Saturday mornings and they are well worth taking. I think we went inside four and saw the rest from the outside. Both guides I had were middle-aged and full of information.
