NYT confirms Helen Mirren Returning to Broadway With ‘The Audience’

Posted by: MockingbirdGirl 12:24 pm EDT 08/06/14

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” and an Olivier Award for her performance as the queen in “The Audience,” a hit on the London stage last year, will extend her realm when “The Audience” comes to Broadway next year. The play is to begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater on Feb. 17 and open on March 8. It is scheduled to run through June 28...

It's been selling so well, I thought they would extend that for the spring if the actors could schedule it.

I thought the audience would go to the longacre or Lyceum.

I'm honestly surprised The Audience isn't going to be a bigger house.

In a smaller house they can charge more for less seats. That is the model. (The River with Hugh Jackman is going into a tiny theater.)

They can charge whatever the heck they want wherever a show starring someone like Helen Mirren plays.

That's the model.

Well, these things are all negotiable...should Once fold (which I predict), they could easily move The Audience there. (Isn't it similar in size?)

They are very similar

In reply to: re: So no extension of its only a play - bwaydiva1 12:54 pm EDT 08/06/14

I don't have exact seat numbers, but looking at the playbill charts for both, they are very similar.

Once is a hard one to figure. It originally cost $325k to run when it opened as reported. So if that number is still close, the show ha never even come close to a losing week. June 15 was the lowest at $400k and it has been steadily increasing over the summer--probably as competitive shows close. It will dip again in the fall. But these low cost shows like rock of ages keep plugging along with surprisingly low numbers.

The Jacobs and Schoenfeld have the biggest orchestra sections (642 and 663) of the theatres in the 1000- to 1100-seat range. The rest have 500 or so, except the O'Neill with 700ish (I'm not sure how many the pit takes out).

But the stop clause could be put into effect-there are tons of shows waiting for theaters that size.

I didn't think you could put a stop clause into effect for a show that's making money.

I think

It's when it falls below 60 or 70 % of potential gross for so many weeks. Soma few bad weeks wouldn't kill a show. But remember that the theater owner gets money on percentage (5-7% range) of gross. So there is incentive of them to have a clear cut way to end a show instead of a more ambiguous "when it's losing money" standard. I've never actually seen a lease agreement, so I don't know what the parameters are, just rumored.

That's true

In reply to: re: They are very similar - bwaydiva1 01:38 pm EDT 08/06/14

It's most likely below minimum grosses over x weeks. But I always wonder if shuberts want to kick out a $500k grossing show that plays 52 weeks over $1m show that plays 16 weeks. Dark theaters between shows aren't making money.

In this market, they wouldn't stay dark for long. "The Audience" followed by something else?

And the Tony goes to...HELEN MIRREN. That is it.

And I can't wait to see her! I am a huge Helen Mirren fan (it's one thing my mom and I agree on-she's able to reach across the generational gap very nicely.)

Caught The Audience in London and realized this is why I love theatre so much. Mirren and the play were terrific. She will lay claim to the Tony for sure.

A little Helen Mirren story...

Helen Mirren was in "Mourning becomes Electra" at the British National Theatre with Eve Best, amazingly it was 11 years ago.

At the performance I saw during a very heated scene between the two of them the lights suddenly went out on stage by mistake, they stopped the scene and they came back up a minute later. Mirren was so composed simply giving "and now" and they both flew back into the heat of the argument. I thought it was such a professional moment so well handled by both actresses.

Can't wait to see "The Audience" here.

Jim-I might be the only one more excited than you. She's one of my very favorite actresses. I think she's also just a cool person (to put it in the vernacular). I love how she doesn't seem to take herself too seriously and yet when she is acting she's fully invested.

No EGOT for Helen yet, if she manages a Tony for "The Audience" She still needs a Grammy... but look up what awards she's won and it's ridiculous. Just about every one out there for Television and Film. And why not?

She can do a book on tape to get the Grammy. I think she's a frontrunner for the Tony.
