A lot of films were "Roadshow" in the 60's not just musicals. Most had an intermission and overture and did run exclusive at a first run house (sometimes for two years (Sound of Music/My Fair Lady/West Side Story)

Then they went into general (wide) release and were often cut in length.

The biggest problem with the late 60's roadshows was that there were too many - so the only the very best made a profit.

Even Roadshows like "Hello Dolly" did very well (though they cost to much to return a profit) but didn't do as well in general release
