Reminds me of Simon Callow in 'Being An Actor', commenting on his play 'Schippel': "It was fascinating to observe that before the notices appeared...the audiences had slowly warmed up by the first act, were chuckling in the second, and bellowing in the third. After the notices, which essentially said THIS PLAY IS FUNNY, they were chuckling in the foyer, roaring at the first couple of lines, and paralytic thereafter. The whole nature of the performance was transformed."
