Just to be clear, I meant that the original run qualified for the Tony Awards as a new musical and the return engagement qualified as a revival.

Then this is not the OBC recording (even though it says it is).

Technically it is the Original Cast Recording of the 1976 production (revival). There is no true Original Broadway Cast Recording of The Robber Bridegroom since the 1975 production only ran for 2 weeks and was not recorded.

It was not uncommon during that era for record companies to label their cast albums as the Original Broadway Cast Recording when in some cases this was not exactly accurate. For example Columbia labeled their studio cast albums of Pal Joey (w/ Segal and Lang) and On the Town (w/ Walker, Comden & Green, and Alexander) as the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

Not according to the Tony Awards. The original limited run was nominated for Best Book and the return engagement with Bostwick was treated as a revival.

I'm guessing the short answer is this...

The original run at the Harkness is listed on IBDB because the theater was considered Broadway (at least at that time) and the show was eligible for Tony awards, even though the run was so brief.

If I understand correctly: Nowadays, a show that ran only two weeks would not be eligible for Tony awards unless the producers managed to invite all the nominators and voters and give them a certain number of options of dates to attend during those two weeks, which would be extremely unlikely. I guess the rules were different back in 1975, as has been discussed here previously.

Anyway, I agree that the recording is not really the original Broadway cast, but I guess it was felt there was some justification in calling it that because the original production had such a brief run and was not a commercial production.

P.S. I think ROBBER BRIDEGROOM remains extremely viable for a Broadway revival, esp. with the right guy in the lead. So if Encores! does decide to do the show, I'm guessing it would be with the idea of moving it to Broadway. And as for the small number of musicians, maybe the show could be presented as part of the Off-Center series, even if the first production was technically a Broadway show.
