Both "True West" and "Spelling Bee" did their best at creating a proscenium experience. There may well have been others - "Metamorphosis"? I didn't see that one.

Obviously, the resulting stage is fairly shallow, but the presentation style can hew closely to that of a proscenium. "Spelling Bee" did a few things elsewhere in the theatre, while "True West" (unless I am misremembering) was purely on the stage.

This is a far cry from the usual three quarters at CitS, which is more like a transverse staging with an audience at an additional end.

Metamorphosis was not one but I think Michael was referring to more of an architectural alteration than you are. I think you are both thinking about the same thing (as am I) which is a far upstage playing area, with just about the full horseshoe sold, and quite a few flat seats snuck in down front.

Yes. I don't remember TRUE WEST very clearly, but SPELLING BEE was still a three-quarter thrust staging, even if the thrust was not as long as other shows.

There have been many different configurations at Circle, including (obviously) the set-up for LADY DAY, and also ROCKY HORROR and FROZEN.

My recollection of True West (and it might not be right) is that it was set further up, like maybe only 2/3 of the way back to the open end. And then there was Glory Days. And then there wasn't. :-)

Shhh we don't talk about that show. (It's like "The Scottish Play"!)
