Reba was so horrible on both of her sitcoms, really bad, but people loved her in Annie Get Your Gun. I felt the same way about Lea Salonga's embarrassing stiff acting on television but she was tremendous in Miss Saigon, ditto Jennie Kwan. Makes me wonder if TV is a harder medium?

I think the kind of energy required to make a performance fill up a theatre is the kind that looks terrible and forced and hammy on TV.

That is one of the best explanations I've heard for the vast difference in some actors' performances on stage vs. TV. Thanks.

The opposite is also true of course - one reason that not all film/TV actors are right for stage work is because they're so used to playing for a camera and don't instinctively know how to "play to the back row" so to speak.

That's funny because I literally sat in the back row for Three Hotels starring Richard Dreyfuss and fell asleep. It's the only time I've nodded off in a theater. He had zero stage presence and was such a snooze. Christine Lahti was fantastic though. I love her.
