Andrea Goss

This is not meant as an attack, but I have just come from where Andrea Goss was/us
and played Sally Bowles. I heave heard that she does the same with the lead in Once. Vocally she is able to reach the highs and lows of those roles--but her persona is a cute, winsome 12 year old without much life or character shading to fall back on to embody these complex
ladies she is assigned to.
When she sings "Maybe This Time" you really can't believe that there have been any others. Her negligee hangs on her---like it belonged to her mother and doesn't quite fit.This, obviously shoots the love triangles and conflicts of the pieces. Surely there must be a wealth of
understudies whose dynamics approach the characters as written. Or Maybe Miss Goss has one hell of an agent.

I saw Andrea Goss go on for Elizabeth A Davis in Once, and I thought she was fine but not much more than that. I was actually kind of confused how Davis got a Tony nomination for that role because there didn't seem to be much substance or impact to the part.

To give Goss some slack in both Cabaret and Once, it can be hard to be the understudy, having little performance time and having to follow the original performer's choices to a large extent, and have the complexity and impact that the original performer might bring.

Also saw her this week as Sally and was also underwhelmed. "Fine" is a perfect word for it.

Was cool to see a former swing/Sally cover, Katrina Yaukey, back in the show as a swing again. I saw her go on as Sally years ago and thought she was fantastic.

Overall, I'm very glad I saw this production again (despite missing Michelle Williams). Alan Cumming is as sharp as ever and I like his different approach to the role this time around.

The first time around, I thought Cumming's performance as the Emcee was heavily driven by his sexuality. There was something magnetic about it and you would almost feel the attraction in the room between audience and star.

This time around, he's not amping up that part of his performance. He's definitely improvising a lot more (most of the intros of the Cabaret girls in "Wilkommen" are completely different now), and at moments I felt there was a knowing wink behind his performance, which I don't think was there before.

He also got laughs in spots this time around that I never saw him get the first time around, most notably before and even during "I Don't Care Much," and I think that was largely in part to the lighter (almost goofier) atmosphere he is setting up this time around.

Again, it's still a performance for the books, but it has changed some. Not better nor worse, just different.

Nightmusic77, thanks for the detailed response. I think I would have preferred the first version. (I haven't seen either yet.) I'm not crazy about the "knowing wink" self-aware kind of performance in general.
