I suppose it was irony but she was also pretty damn good though she did not, could not, fulfill the vocal or physical elements of the role. Consequently, she "appeared" pretty damn good due to audience projection with her persona. The musical is ironic and her performance paralleled the irony of the material. I am not sure what that really means. Brantley's review is attached. Take from it what you will. (He alludes to McEntire but, in my opinion, her performance can not be seriously compared to Ms. McEntire 's. )
