Yeah, unlike that hack David Merrick, who never even bothered to change the names of "Fanny", "42nd Street" or "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

Guess what? There are exceptions to every rule and every generalization, even when they are largely true.

The point is that, back in the day, when films (or other properties) were adapted for the musical stage, the titles were almost always changed. As to Merrick, for every 42nd STREET there were ten shows with title changes, many of which have already been mentioned here.

actually "Breakfast at Tiffany's was "Holly Golightly" during it's out-of-town tryout at the Shubert Theatre in Boston

But even by changing to the more recognizable name of the novella/film could not salvage this infamous bomb that closed in previews on Broadway

Well, "Tiffany's" was a huge flop. Merrick did produce "Take Me Along", a musical version of "Ah, Wilderness", "Hello, Dolly!" ("The Matchmaker"), "Carnival" (based on the film "Lili"), etc.
