Does anyone know why the Public Theater production was canceled?

As I'm sure many of you remember, THE VISIT was announced for production by The Public Theater several years ago -- not just rumored, officially announced -- but then the production was canceled.

For the life of me, I've never been able to figure out why. I can't imagine the show would have been THAT much more expensive than some of the other shows the Public produces, and I have to think that Chita Rivera in a new musical by Kander and Ebb would have sold better than many of those shows beyond the subscription base.

Anybody have a clue?

"A planned production at the Public Theater was scrapped when the producer Barry Brown, who had a commercial interest in the show, lost two of his major investors. Then Ebb died in 2004, and Mr. Kander, the composer, struggled to assume the task of writing lyrics without his longtime creative partner."

I believe Frank Langella was set to play Anton in that production. Rivera has certainly played opposite a share of great leading men throughout this musical's history.

Thank you very much, I missed that article. I personally think it would still have been worthwhile for The Public to produce the show downtown without outside investors, not necessarily with the intention of moving it to Broadway, but thanks for the explanation.
