Guess what? There are exceptions to every rule and every generalization, even when they are largely true. The point is that, back in the day, when films (or other properties) were adapted for the musical stage, the titles were almost always changed. As to Merrick, for every 42nd STREET there were ten shows with title changes, many of which have already been mentioned here.
