Peter a DRAG?

Posted by: hitbycab 10:17 am EDT 08/10/14

Lena Dunham is sooo happy for Alison Williams appearing in what Lena calls the greatest drag story in literature
(something like that...see TV Guide))

Hmm? Never thought of Peter Pan the musical like that...

Aren't such roles usually "breeches parts"? (i.e. when a woman plays a male role).

I still can't get over the fact that they could not get a recognizable name for this role. I have never heard of Williams, but I hope she can make a good Peter Pan; it is not as easy a role as people might think.

If it's such a difficult role (not disputing that, by the way), who are the recognizable names that they should've been able to get?

"I hope she can make a good Peter Pan; it is not as easy a role as people might think."

What makes you think anyone thinks it's an "easy" role? It may not be difficult in terms of vocal or choreographic demands, but it requires tremendous amounts of other talents, charisma, personality, and hard-to-define star quality.

I too have never heard of her, but I don't own a tv and have never seen "Girls" so it's jot surprising to me.

I thought I read the greatest challenge with casting is hiring someone who can fully commit from August to December, and since this project just got the green light earlier this year, perhaps a lot of more well-known celebrities were already booked for other gigs.

I'm still bummed they didn't buck tradition and hire a male.

Hire a man to play Peter? I'm so glad they DIDN'T do that! Some things are perfect just the way they are!

This would have been a golden opportunity for a member of ONE DIRECTION or some other boy band guy or an Austin Mahone.
..even Ariande Grande.
Great publicity

Carrie Underwood was the draw for me...not another version of Sound of Music.

With Allison Williams all they have is the Peter Pan allure.

As it stands now, I will peek in to see what it looks like but I'm pretty sure I won't be sticking with 2 or 3 hours.
There really is no lure for me with Peter Pan.

But a la Jersey Boys the Movie, ya never know!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure they're figuring that Christopher Walken is their "name." The Sound of Music only had one "name" performer. Why would we expect two in Peter Pan?

Well, we know they asked Kristen Bell, so clearly they were hoping for more than one "name" lead.

Do we know if they asked Bell after Walken had already been signed?

I'm not sure I buy the whole Bell story anyway. According to the timeline, when they asked Bell, she had already announced her pregnancy. So what did they expect to do with a Peter in his third trimester?

There was a story that came out this week that Glee's Diana Agron had been offered the role but didn't want to commit that long.

As for some of the earlier suggestions. New Direction is still doing quite well still - for the time being. It'd be career suicide for any of the members to do the show. Far from a golden opportunity.

I can't think of many big names that would want to commit to a lengthy rehearsal period, much less star in the followup to the much-mocked first SOM, ratings aside.

That's not true. "Bell’s real-life pregnancy also would’ve made playing the high-flying character a challenge, although [NBC President Robert] Greenblatt said he 'talked to her before' her baby news was announced in June. (Bell charmed viewers with her multi-talents in May’s Maya Rudolph variety special on NBC.)"

Fair enough for that particular article but in one of the articles posted right here, there was a quote from someone involved with the production that they'd talk to her "last week" which time wise was nearly a month after she announced her pregnancy. Seems the story changes depending on whom talks.
