It's been a while since I've read it, but, as I remember, Barrie's novel goes to dark and scary Freudian places that the musical just sort of glosses over and/or ignores.

It made me wonder at the time if the traditional doubling of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling was an intentional nod toward Barrie's darker tone.
