Why don't hit Bway shows run forever?

Posted by: Zelgo 01:11 pm EDT 08/11/14

...well, some shows DO seem to be running forever nowadays.

But, seriously, with tourists being a huge chunk of the audience, why don't hit shows run forever as a never-ending supply of tourists constantly arrive in NYC?

Do tours mean that most have the opportunities to see shows in their hometowns so won't see the same ones again in NYC? Do people like the idea of a new show over an old one? Do older shows spend less in advertising so most don't remember them?
