That aside, I do think the phenomenon described was real. Certainly not for all audience members, but real nonetheless.

Based on overhearing their pre-show discussions, the people behind me when I saw the show were not regular theatergoers, but were avid fans of the movie (one gentleman couldn't count how many times he had seen it). They didn't know anything about the stage adaptation (there had been an argument between two of them as to whether or not the show they were about to see was a musical or a straight play). They cheered, loudly, every time there was something on stage that directly referenced the movie: Bill Conti's theme, The Eye of the Tiger, the run up the steps, the descent of the sides of beef from the flies, etc. etc. etc. Their post-show discussion indicated that they didn't really care for the musical as a whole. They laughed almost every time Rocky sang (especially the many versions of "My Nose Ain't Broken"). But boy, did they love the stuff that was directly related to the movie.

Obviously we're both just sharing anecdotes. But I don't think there can be any doubt that there is some segment of the Rocky audience that is cheering for the things that they find familiar. The size of that segment can be debated (but the debate would be pointless, since no data exists to settle it), but not that it exists.
