Well, for the musicals, I think what may happen is that the music starts to fall out of fashion. The arrangements in "Cats," for example, sounded very 1980s. ("Phantom" has this problem too -- though there are many other positive things going on for it than "Cats" had.)

At some point, "Wicked" may start to sound dated too, the music will stop connecting with people, and then it will close.
