But, seriously, with tourists being a huge chunk of the audience, why don't hit shows run forever as a never-ending supply of tourists constantly arrive in NYC?

This is just speculation, but perhaps despite the large percentage of tourists (66% in 2012-13) who make up Broadway audiences, many of these are going to TKTS route, and are thus not necessarily more "valuable" in terms of revenue than those in the tri-state area.
