I think you'd have to do a more specific analysis on the handful of shows that fall into this category. And I guess you also have to define "forever" because at the same time you ask this question, there are several examples of shows that are going strong and don't show any sign of dying soon.

I am thinking you mean shows that run a really long time and then close. For example, why do Phantom and Lion King not close, yet Lez Miz, Cats, and Beauty and the Beast do? They appear to have many of the same things going for them. Or going a bit further back, why does Fiddler on the Roof close? Or Rent?

I don't really have an answer. Except I think it will be different for each show you examine rather than a blanket explanation.
