"Theatre" and "Broadway" mean different things as time passes. But just to reflect how things change:

In calendar year 1955, 76 productions opened on Broadway, including 13 new musicals (all of which had entirely new scores) and 38 new plays; 20 productions (26%) were revivals, including several G&S shows in rep, and City Center limited-run musicals.

In calendar year 2013, 45 productions opened on Broadway, including 10 "new" musicals (including several with rather antique scores), and 11 new plays; 18 productions (40%) were revivals, including a few Shakespeare plays.

Looking at intervening seasons, the trends are towards fewer new productions, fewer plays, more revivals, and musicals featuring already-existing songs.
