ROCKY/Tourists/Data

Posted by: enoch10 03:27 pm EDT 08/11/14

i posted below that i thought the numbers for ROCKY would pick up if they held on until summer. then i started thinking about why they didn't and wondering what role word of mouth plays with tourists. i wish there was data available on tourists and broadway. we know how many tourists there are and how many buy tickets but not much more. not enough. for example, i figure there are different kinds of tourists buying tickets.

- those with almost no interest is broadway but figure they are here and it is part of the experience so they might as well buy a ticket

- those who come and have some interest in theater but aren't that knowledgeable and have no friends in nyc to ask

- those who come with some (or a lot of) interest and are staying with friends or who will spend time with friends they will consult with and buy accordingly

- those plugged into theater and who won't rely on word of mouth at all.

this isn't intended to be an exhaustive list and i dont know if such data would be of any other use than being interesting but i suspect ROCKY failed due to the tourists who rely or are influenced by word of mouth. i think if you're only in town for a few days and can only catch a couple of shows then "the score sucks but the last 10 minutes are great" isn't going to sell many tickets.
