I'm surprised you've never heard of it. Maybe you're too young a theater nerd. It's a cult musical -- A&H's first show. The two off-Broadway productions were indeed short but were done by prestigious non-profits, Playwrights Horizons in 1988 (it won the Richard Rodgers Award) and the York in 2003. Some well-known theater actors have been in productions over the years: Julie White, Mary Testa, Evan Pappas, Frances Ruffelle, Tracie Bennett, Malcolm Gets, and Janet Metz. Judy Blazer, Jason Graae, Debbie Shapiro Gravitte, Paul Kandel, and Patrick Quinn were all on the '94 cast recording which was produced by Bruce Kimmel. The songs are very book-centric so they won't be sung at concerts. However, they're funny and catchy.

The show gets done a lot in the Chicago area -- more than any other A&H show outside of Seussical. There have been at least a dozen productions over the last 15 years including a major one about 10 years ago at Drury Lane Oakbrook. Small, non-equity theaters do the show a lot -- in my area anyway.

That said, you're right that no one other than older theater nerds know this show. Still I'm glad the movie was made. It seems well-cast. Alexander plays the relatively small roll of Vinnie the optometrist - he's perfect for the part.
