"Elegance"

I understand that Bob Merrill reportedly wrote ''Elegance,'' too. But how did that come about: through David Merrick or Gower Champion? I can't imagine that Jerry Herman could be thrilled about inserting someone else's songs into his score.

Along those lines, Charles Strouse reveals in his memoir, ''Put on a Happy Face,'' that Champion encouraged him and Lee Adams to write a new song for ''Hello, Dolly!,'' based on a phrase that caught their eye from Thorton Wilder's ''The Matchmaker.'' The phrase: ''Before the Parade Passes By.'' However, Strouse says the version that's in the show is Herman's own creation.

But thanks to Strouse & Adams' work (they also restructured the Act I finale), they get some $$$ from that song.

I wonder if this still happens: I would imagine that the Dramatists Guild would protect the original writer's work.
